In VCE Drama you will examine the work of theatre practitioners and devise your own group and solo performances. You will work from stimulus material to create your own interpretations and artistic expression presented to an audience.
Through the study of Drama you will:
· Develop your ability to communicate effectively
· Learn how to connect with an audience
· Learn how to present confidently
· Explore the ideas of professionals who have had a profound impact on this art form
· Learn how to develop script from inception through to performance
· Work with others to create cohesive and meaningful performance
· Perform characters and narratives of your own invention
How is the course structured?
In Units 1 and 2 there are 4 Areas of study. In Units 3 and 4 there are 3 Areas of study. Essentially each unit looks at creation of a performance, presentation of the performance, documentation of the creative process, analysis and reflection.
Unit 1: Dramatic Story telling
You will look at how best to tell a story through the manipulation of specific dramatic elements to create both naturalistic and non-naturalistic performances. This unit focuses on creating real and imagined characters. You will analyse your own performance and the work of professional practitioners.
Unit 2: Non-naturalistic Australian drama
In this unit, you will experiment with non-naturalistic performance styles and create performances drawing on your knowledge of Australian characters, locations, art and/or events etc. You will analyse your own performance and the work of professional practitioners.
Unit 3: Devised non-naturalistic ensemble performance
In this unit you will work with fellow students to create a self-devised, non-naturalistic performance. You will see and analyse a live theatre show.
Unit 4: Non-naturalistic solo performance
In this unit you will work with others and your teacher to create a non-naturalistic solo performance drawing on inspiration from stimulus material.
Throughout the course you will participate in workshops designed to increase your confidence. You will be encouraged to experiment with different ways of communicating your ideas in a supportive, creative environment.
