What do I learn in VCE Media?
VCE Media focuses on your place within the diverse and constantly evolving media landscape. Through a range of practical and theoretical activities you will:
How is the course structured?
Each unit has three areas of study, which each have a separate assessment task. In each semester there is a good balance of both prac and theory.
Unit 1: Representation and technologies of representation
Area of Study 1: Representation
This area of study focuses on an analysis of media representations and how such representations depict, for example, events, people, places, organisations and ideas. (Theory)
Area of Study 2: Technologies of representation
In this area of study you will produce representations in two or more media forms. You will also analyse how the application of the different media technologies affects the meanings that can be created in the representations. The implications for the creation, distribution and consumption of these representations are also discussed. (Prac)
Area of Study 3: New Media
In this area of study you will explore the emergence of new media technologies. The impact and implications of new media technologies are considered in the context of the capabilities of the technologies, their relationship with existing media and how they provide alternative means of creation, distribution and consumption of media products. You will investigate the changes, possibilities and
issues that arise from the development of new technologies and how these alter audience experience and understanding of the media. (Theory)
Unit 2: Media production and the media industry
Area of Study 1: Media Production
This area of study focuses on you (and your group) fulfilling specific production roles to complete six weeks of film making. (Prac)
Area of Study 2: Media industry production
In this area of study you will focus on national, international and global media industry issues, and the developments in the media industry and their impact on media production stages, and specialist roles within these stages. (Theory)
Area of Study 3: Australian media organisations
In this area of study you'll analyse Australian media organisations within a social, industrial and global framework. (Theory)
Unit 3: Narrative and media production design
Area of Study 1: Narrative
In this area of study you will analyse the nature and function of production and story elements in two narrative media texts, and discuss the impact of these elements on audience engagement. (Theory)
Area of Study 2: Media production skills
On completion of this unit you will use a range of technical equipment, applications and media processes and evaluate the capacity of these to present ideas, achieve effects and explore aesthetic qualities in media forms. (Prac)
Area of Study 3: Media production design
In this area of study you will focus on the preparation of a production design plan for a media product designed for a specific audience in a selected media form. The design of a media production is an essential creative and organisational stage of the production process. You can choose: video, radio, animation, photography, print, a digital or online production, or a convergent media production (basically a mixture of the other mediums) (Prac & Theory)
Unit 4: Media: process, influence and society’s values
Area of Study 1: Media process
In this area of study you complete your media product based on a media production design plan completed in Unit 3. (Prac)
Area of Study 2: Media texts and society's values
In this area you will focus on the relationship between society’s values and media texts. You will undertake the study of an identified significant idea, social attitude or discourse located in a range of media texts to critically analyse its representation in the media. (Theory)
Area of Study 3: Media influence
This area of study focuses on an analysis of media influence. You'll explore the complexity of the relationship between the media, its audiences and the wider community in terms of the nature and extent of the media’s influence.

Q. If I haven't completed any media classes before, can I enroll in VCE Media?
A. Yes, there are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 or 3.
Q. Do I need my own camera to enroll in the subject?
A. No, the college has many HD cameras that you can use to complete the practical tasks.
Q. Can I use my own camera to complete practical work?
A. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter whose equipment you use; you're all assessed in the same way.
Q. Can I specialise in photography (or any other medium)?
A. Yes. There is the ability to focus on skills relating to a specific medium in each of the practical tasks.
